Clayton Supply Ads New Window Line

Clayton Supply in the Hillsboro industrial park recently expanded its operation, adding a vinyl window production line to its operations.

The new division is located in the old Oakwood Homes complex on Pecos Street.

Clayton took possession of the Hillsboro property after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., owner of Clayton, bought Oakwood’s assets out of bankruptcy in 2003.

The company had the local property for sale for a period of time before opening its warehouse and Classic Panels wallboard divisions in 2011.

The warehouse supplies a variety of items to Clayton’s eight manufacturing plants in Texas, while the panel division applies wallpaper-type material to wallboard for the company’s home.

In 2013 the company bought Fontana Wood Products, which builds wood trusses for homes manufactured by Clayton.

The company invested $3.5 million in equipment and electrical upgrades to the building to add the window unit, according to interim General Manager Doug Eudy, who has been with the company for a couple of years.

This is Eudy’s second stint in Hillsboro having served as the local plant manager for Oakwood in the early 1990s.

Jeremy Miller will assume the duties as the new general manager Monday, January 30.

The windows unit added 45 people to Clayton’s local workforce, bringing its total to 135.

Prior to adding the local division, windows for the Texas manufacturing plants were trucked to Hillsboro for distribution from a plant in Rossville, Tennessee. The move drastically cut transportation costs for the company.

“Initially the Hillsboro operation will supply the Texas plants, but once production is up to speed, windows may be shipped to Clayton’s manufacturing operations of the West Coast,” Eudy said.

The interim manager didn’t rule out that there could be some sales outside of the company at some point in the future.

The plant is currently producing 400 windows per day.

Eudy added, “We make all sizes of vinyl, insulated windows. There is 40 to 50 styles and sizes with different types of glass that are required just for Clayton’s use.”

In December crews were working 10-hour shifts five days a week to keep pace with demand, but that was expected to drop to a regular 40-hour work week in the New Year.
